Youth Discovered Dead After Untrue Allegations of Taking Ashes

One 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days following being falsely blamed of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.

False Accusations Start

The investigation heard how his parent got a communication on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if her son was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."

In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was false.

Police Investigation

An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the property was never stolen in the first place".

News coverage about the supposed taken ashes generated social media responses, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".

The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.

Mental Wellbeing Impact

She explained that her son had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".

The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.

Withdrawal and Worry

His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".

When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.

Online Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.

The inquest heard that a young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.

She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".

She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".

He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".

Educational Response

The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at Connah's Quay secondary school.

On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.

After the discussion, the educator said she called the family's parents' landline and left a message saying she had communicated to Kai about the allegations.

The court heard his parents said they did not got that message.

Formal Conclusion

Senior investigator told the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.

Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.

"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the platform of social media.

"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries proceeded."

The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to discern his intent."
